The minutes this arrived, I was hooked and sat right where I was and didn't look up for an hour. I was waiting for this book to be published and know the author, so I knew it was in the works. It's quite a simple book, but one that will be a definite part of my library so my curiosity about plants growing in the San Luis Valley, especially ones that the author cites as his "favorites," can become my favorites, too. I have a small house in the area and we've talked about certain plants and flowers from time to time and now I have a lot of information at my fingertips. I especially like the interspersed gems about the San Luis Valley, its peoples, history, and development. The photos are great and reading what the Indians used various plants and types of tree parts for in the past was fascinating. And -- I know now to avoid Locoweed!
Growing free is a gorgeous book about the plants that live in the San Luis Valley. Leland, with his fantastic photography gives us a glimpse of the beauty that surrounds him in his beloved San Luis Valley in Colorado. I highly recommend it for the photography alone, but his information about the plants is excellent , too.
I purchased this book to use in common plant identification in south central Colorado and northern New Mexico, and couldn't have been more satisfied. There are multiple photos of most of the featured plants, showing various stages of growth, variations, and details. I was able to quickly identify the plants I'd been curious about. The text contains many interesting bits of information.
Leland's book was extremely helpful when I needed a refresher on SLV plants (and luckily, particularly eastern SLV plants) for a literary project. The text was well formatted and easy to flip through on my kindle for quick reference. The fun facts sections with information and history on the SLV provided entertaining breaks between batches of material.I admit that this book is pretty niche reading, but I'm thankful that exactly what I needed was available on Amazon at such a reasonable price. Two thumbs up.
Author Leland Dirks has been living in isolated San Luis Valley of Colorado for over ten years. He enjoys walking his two dogs noticing something new or different every day. He's studied and researched all the flowers, bushes, and trees and has shared his beautiful photos and in-depth descriptions here with his fans. The tree which is described as the Rocky Mountain Juniper has an amazing history behind it. This isn't a complete listing of all his encounters, but is a great sampling.
