A well researched and written account of the First Gulf War. Being the only major war in the recent past comparable to other major campaigns like the Falkland, this account evokes interest, being contemporary and having happened in our lifetime - thus making us relate to it more intimately. The Naval Historical Centre is firstly not biased and gives a full rounded perspective, which can often be the first casualty in an official documentation. The narrative flows well but sometimes appears like a staid statement of facts. Notwithstanding the aforesaid, the book is certainly a labour of good research and analysis offers interesting insight. In particular, by not just jumping to the war but explaining the area's demography, culture, historical baggage makes the understanding better. The campaign is covered very well. A most recommended read for naval officers. Good training, reliable int, focussed in depth planning and above all a constantly thinking mind is key to success. Iraq had none of the above. The result was easy to see, but at that time, I sure was expecting a tough bout for the US and coalition forces.
The book covers quite a bit of the build up before combat. The begining covers some interesting history of the Gulf and it's oil production. This helps us fully understand what brought us to war there in the 90's. Most of it concerns operational/longistical aspects of the Sheild/Storm. I would have given it 5 stars for glossy pages, more photos, and more detailed operational descriptions of the navy ship's day to day action in the gulf, especially the Battleships. I've read some of these stories in other books. One thing I can say is that it changed my mind on a lot of things that I incorrectly remembered about watching the war on TV.

This war--and virtually every one the United States is involved in--does not begin to happen without the Navy. The Navy's role in this war was particularly noteworthy. Noted historians Marolda and Schneller have provided for posterity a well-researched and well-written account of a major event of the 20th century.

The book really picks every aspect of this war apart and delivers in an logical and clear tone. A perfect reference.

GREATBOOK TO READ AND FACTS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE U.S. NAVY AND DEFENSE DEPT.
This book was sold as "like new" but when I received it, it has some weird sticky mess on the cover. Unimpressive.
