Wow. Just wow. I’m reading book three of the series now, but had to come back and review book two before my review turned into a novel of its own.I am amazed. Truly amazed. I’ve never worked directly in law enforcement but spent years working in various municipal, state and county agencies a hundred years ago when the CAD system was just coming online. In addition to my programming duties, I also served as a sympathetic ear to the officers, deputies and game wardens that were so frustrated with our judicial system.I was convenient. I was always there, with nothing more to do than run 1,000 yards of network cable back in the days before wireless, program each workstation and teach each LEO how to do reports on the computers instead of by hand. I had plenty of spare time!In the extreme southeast, it’s a revolving door. Perps appear in court or not, it’s their choice. They pay their fines or not. It’s their choice, the jails are full of people who were caught with a joint. No room at the inn. They just shot a pregnant doe out of season, let ‘em go. The laws haven’t changed in the last twenty years. The southern Baptist lawmakers make sure of that.I had one particular game warden I was extremely close to. He so wanted to protect our resources. Sadly, he died at the age of 42. He left behind a wife and two boys. I state this in honor of him: I’ve since relocated to Colorado where the fines are steep enough and the penalties are deep enough that people leave the wildlife alone.I have my pet deer. I know it’s against the law to feed them. I’m breaking the law each time I take out a sack of corn or sweet feed. But when I see them eating bark off the juniper or pine trees, I can’t resist. They’re hungry.Sure, the mountain lions will come after them when they congregate. I heard a lion grab one of them. She had broken a hind leg somehow, she was doomed. It hurt, she was one of mine and the lion caught her in my back yard. I haven’t shot a deer in years and I never will again. I protect myself. I protect my dogs from the lions and bears, oh my! No tigers,thankfully.I hunted them in the Deep South. Everybody did. I always obeyed the game laws. Most everybody else ignored them. I once called in a report of poachers spot lighting a clear cut near my stand. The one game warden in a county spanning 80 miles told me he had to stay with his kids that night, because his wife was in class, pursuing her masters degree. He had to change diapers while poachers had their way with our wildlife.What disgusts me is despite the work the wardens in California did, despite the work they put into these cases, most of the time these poachers got off with a slap on the wrist.Don’t give up, guys and girls. There is hope. And Terry Hodges: You are an extremely talented author! I will read all the books in this series. You have touched my heart. The excerpts that so brilliantly illustrate what the wildlife and fish are living just make me all the more determined to help protect them.Enjoying your books tremendously and doing so in memory of the fallen game wardens, like the friend I had that died in the commission of his sworn duties.
This is the second book in the exciting Warden Force series. Even better than the first, this edition finds the wardens battling snake collectors, bear and fish poachers and more. The undercover operations are fascinating and thrilling and it is a shame that the fines are not larger, not is the mail time long for the damage being done to rate species. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. Highly recommended and enjoyable.
Always enjoy the writing of Warden Hodges. Keeps me engaged through the whole book. I believe he puts into perspective how dangerous it can be, doing the job that really gets no recognition.
