If you enjoy the TV show you will appreciate this cookbook. The recipe instructions are clear. It is organized by category (pasta, tex-mex, soup, French cuisine, etc.) so I have found the index more useful if I have a particular dish or ingredient in mind. Be aware that this is a hefty tome; seven pounds. It takes up quite a bit of counter space. The print is rather small, so good light is desirable.
I gave this cookbook to a fan of the show as a birthday gift... it was a hit! In fact it is so large and comprehensive it seems overwhelming but if you view it as a great reference and don't try to tackle the complete volume then is is a wonderful addition to any cooks kitchen.
I was spooked by the price, but it is well worth it. Lots of recipes in there to try, if my wife will let go of it. She seems to be reading it cover-to-cover. We watch the show, even reruns, with eagerness. You can almost hear them speaking as you read. Great explanations of cooking chemistry that help develop your own practices with family recipes. This is going to sit right alongside our "Joy of Cooking" cookbooks. If the show ever folds, the final cookbook revision will be an enduring classic.
We love the show but were disappointed with the format of this version; we have "The Complete Cook's County TV Show Cookbook... from all 9 Seasons" (2016) in paperback from the library, which has one recipe per page, opposite a full-page photo of the dish. This latest version, however, does not follow that format; rather, it has several recipes per page with infrequent pictures. Plus the recipes are not the same: the minestrone soup from the 'library' version, for example, looks tastier than the one in this latest version (which includes cabbage). We prefer the older version with the more user-friendly format.
All of the basic recipes you would want that come out great every time. For example Chicken Pot Pie, Tamale Pie, Fajitas, Roast Chicken, Meat Loaf, Beef Stew, Mac and Cheese etc. .Several popular ethnic recipes are included as well. With over a thousand recipes this cookbook has almost everything you want to make. If you are thinking of making something it is almost sure to have it.
This is my vary favorite cookbook. Had it for a few mo tha and everything I've made has come out amazing. It was hard for me to buy a cookbook since the internet has so many free recipes, but this was worth every penny. I love that this cookbook seems to have such a huge variety of recipes- each of which they have spent considerable time working to perfect. There are many American staples as well as all sorts of international dishes. The best part is that if you want to make something non-traditional, they have perfected the recipe for the American home cook utilizing ingredients that can be found at most regular supermarkets. The book also does a good job of explaining techniques, and most of the recipes have a prologue that explains some necessary facet of what makes the dish work.
This has become my favorite cookbook. I like that every recipe tells you why it works. The Chicken Marsala has become an instant family favorite. I have yet to make a recipe that has not been great. Great value...it's a huge cookbook!!
Yeah, I know I can get recipes for about anything by using the Internet, but I prefer being able to take my time and reference them as I cook. The variety of recipes and the explanations in this cookbook make it invaluable. Liked it so much that I got one for my sister who claims it's one of her all-time favorite gifts.
