Wow! I am the youngest of three girls and neither of my sisters were able to have their own children with no logical explanation. It was heart wrenching watching each of them struggle to have children of their own and then later adopt. Their faith was challenged and in the end was made stronger. Sara Hagerty does an excellent job of communicating the pain, agony, and struggle of searching for answers of why? Why me, why not now Lord? She paints a vivid picture describing her quest to know God more, to search for His answer, His word, to find that the bitter can be sweet. I love this book because everyone struggles and everyone who has faith searches for God and answers. This book is for those that search for more in life, more of God and finding that even when life is hard, discouraging, and we want to just cry out to God for help, He is there, willing, waiting, and loving us all the way.
Absolutely wonderful book. Sarah Hagerty has been able to capture the journey of growing deeply with God in the midst of our own sin and the world's suffering in ways that I resonated with after each and every chapter. She discusses a new aspect of who God is through the lens of her own story - while this is a very personal thing, she also has the ability to help you find how God has spoken the same to you personally through the chapters as well as the colection of verses at the end of the chapters.Please seriously consider giving this book a try if you are at all interested.
The past few months have been hectic. Doctors’ appointments and building this blog have gotten in the way of the long stretches of time I used to spend reading. So when I first sat down to read Every Bitter Thing is Sweet: Tasting the Goodness of God in All Things by Sara Hagerty, I expected to spend a few days or weeks working through the book.Well, about four hours and one large butt-print on the couch later, I had finished the whole thing.And now I want to go back and read it again, slowly, to let everything sink in.This book is not just about infertility and adoption, though they do play a large role. It’s also about marriage, depression, vulnerability, and figuring out how to hope. But I think this book would touch people who haven’t experienced infertility. Hagerty writes so beautifully that it would be easy to get swept up in her words even if the book was about milking cows (no disrespect to those of you who enjoy cow-milking books!).Yet despite the gut-wrenchingly honest descriptions of her sorrow, she writes even more beautifully about hope and healing.If you want a book that will both challenge and encourage you, I highly recommend Every Bitter Thing is Sweet by Sara Hagerty.(I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review).
The writing style is poetic prose that never crosses over into sentimentality but beautifully expresses the sometimes hidden beauty of truth. Through one woman's struggles with frustration, disappointment, heartache, and other difficult emotions as she journeys toward Truth, this book encouraged me in my journey. The book doesn't gloss life but reveals the diamond beneath the coal. Although Sara Hagerty's experience is from a decidedly feminine perspective, I believe men can benefit from the underlying challenges all humans face and the faith that both sustains us on the journey and leads us home. I highly recommend this book.
