Children's picture books ought to be fun, interesting, engaging, AND helpful in some manner (whether that "help" is in the way of using imagination, educating on a topic, etc.). I have found that most "Christian" books on "Christian" topics fall far short from fun / interesting / engaging, in their solitary desire to help / educate / instruct. Let us remember this isn't a textbook on how to pray, this is supposed to be a picture book that draws children into the delight that is, conversing with God. I am a pastor's kid, homeschooled, homeschool parent now, college graduate, and an AVID reader and learner (I read 30-50 books each year, not counting those I read to my children). I have a passion for instilling the desire for a life with Jesus, into my kids, as well as delighting them with words and pictures to broaden their minds. This book falls plainly into the "meh" category of many other Christian books we've read (including many with great Amazon reviews). My kids would maybe listen to this once, and never ask for it again. Each "spread" of the book contains one lackluster, generic photo of children doing not very much (similar to what is shown on the cover). The activity shown in the art doesn't seem to resonate with the words on the page. The other half of each spread is completely filled with words (no white space). The words are copious, somewhat repetitive, set in a swirly font that's not easy to read, and honestly, just plain boring. I don't find God boring at all, and I don't find Him needing to be over-simplified for my kids. The book lacks the ability to stimulate the mind or eyes or imagination. It isn't particularly interesting to the adult reading out loud, let alone the child listening. It won't find a home in our family library, and I will keep looking for a better replacement. I'm sure the author meant well, but this is so stoically informational, it has nothing to draw the reader in or capture their spirit.
This book is a must read for children to teens to adults! I read this to my 10 year old daughter almost every night to keep fresh in her mind to have love for Jesus and mankind. The book is a large hardback yet it fits comfortably for small hands to hold! The illustrations are quite cute and colorful as well!
I bought this as a gift for a five year old child with questions about God. After having read through it myself I feel that it is absolutely perfect for what I wanted. It presents God as a loving, forgiving, supportive Father figure to whom we can always speak freely about anything we want. It was very important to me that the book I gift this child with have nothing scary or intimidating whatsoever in it. Also it had to have nothing that would be offensive or deterring to her mother who is not a Christian but is willing to allow her child who does believe to be educated about God. I am very confident that this will help the child I am sending it to develop a sense of what praying is about and who God is from an age appropriate point of view. Highly recommended!
We purchased this book to help explain to our son the concept of prayer. I really enjoyed it and I think it gave him some insight we couldn't find the right words for. At some points it can be a little verbose, especially when you're reading to a younger child (age 4 or 5) but we will continue to revisit it periodically over the years and then read the scriptures to back it up. I think it is a good supplement to help children understand the concept of prayer and why it's important.
The book is well written for children. The author explains the importance of prayer and that Jesus is God's son. I read it to my three year old. She loved the pictures and she loved reciting the little prayer at the end of every page.
a great book to help kids understand about prayer. Every parent should have this book and use it to help teach their children to speak to God. Ms. Omartian handles the issue of God answering prayers in a straightforward Scriptural way. This book is so good, I bought 15 copies, one for each of my Bible Class students.
This is a wonderful book!! We purchased this to read with our 4 year old Granddaughter. She and I enjoyed reading it so very much!! It is a great way to teach the children in your life all about praying!! Excellent!! I would recommend this terrific book to everyone!!
We love this book, and read it daily. She loves the illustrations and learning about how we pray. It has helped her process her own prayers better. I would buy it again and am recommending it to friends and family.
