Another Harry Gilmour adventure..... not as good as his first book, but a very good read. David Black does a masterful job of presenting the life of a junior officer aboard ship. He is especially good at drawing the initial resistance of an enlisted crew to a new officer, and what it takes by that officer to be accepted by them.I am looking forward to Harry's next adventure... I hope it is aboard a serving submarine in the British Navy...If you like sea stories written with knowledge, humour, and a true understanding of how the British navy worked in WWII (through the eyes of a young officer) yuou will like this book

When I was offered this book as one of the free Kindle books I admit to having shrugged my shoulders and thought "Why not?". The reviews were, for the most part, from folks who understood the extraordinary life of a submariner and could identify with the story and so I plunged (no pun intended) in. Wow, what an adventure! I was held spellbound throughout the entire book and shooed my children away several times during the highest action sequences. David Black managed to tell this story to me, a woman with no experience with war time submarines or war at all really, without making me feel lost or bored. I understood how these men felt, smelled (whew!!), ate, loved and hated and trusted each other which is no small feat, thank you David Black. I absolutely loved it! My respect and admiration goes out to these unique, courageous men.

A splendid book, full of the unique atmosphere of Royal Navy in general, and of the Submarine Service in particular. Fiction - maybe, but fiction, that even if containing a few minor errors (to make the text more understandable by a non-naval reader?) is still accurate enough to satisfy the demands of any past or present member of "the Trade". To the greatest credit of the author, there are no heroics, no cheaply patriotic drums beating. Instead, one winces in fear hearing the "click" of the firing pistol of a depth charge about to detonate, the reader's face is whipped raw by the freezing spray while standing a beastly middle watch on the bridge somewhere off the Norwegian coast, and the hot mug of kay in the wardroom tastes better than anything else on earth. This is a splendid book about the Navy that does not exist any more, even if it's tradition persists with the undiminished vigour. It is, indeed, a book for all who once experienced the sound of the "Diving Stations" claxon and want to experience it again, and for all those who want to know how it might feel in reality...

I read this book more or less non stop and as a result ordered the next two in the series. These books for me were a very good read and was not disapointed in any of them and have recently reread the three of them. Even for someone who has little knowledge of the sea these books carry enough action intrigue and manipulation to keep one interested. As with so many "action" there is the long sequences of hurry up and wait, and when the action kicks in the first thing is the plan is disregarded. The books follow the early career of one RNVR (Royal Naval Reserve) sub Lieutenant from his inception inot the navy as a very junior officer where he is castigated by his senior colleagues on a capital ship and experiences his first manipulation by a junior rank, however his slightly senior peers makes life unbearable for him and through a roundabout way finds his way to submarine duty where he finds his mission in life. It is not an easy career path but one that suits Harry and he progreeses through battle and other action performing some daring exploits along the way until eventually only three years after being a spotty faced student he emerges as a force to be reckoned with with his knowledge and experience. His second book The skippers dog is Stalin is well wroth reading even if just from a comedy point of view to see how the crews of free French submarines saw there allegiance to the Royal Navy and shows a complete different view of the atmosphere on a French submarine to a RN Submarine. The book goes on to describe the utter devastation sufeered by Malta and how the lifelines were tried to maintain supplies but the gradual devastation of the dockyards are very well described and shows how close the Axis powers were to success in regard to Malta. At the end of the book (Turn left at Gibraltar) harry gilmour after another memorable operation is posted to the UK to take his skippers course. The trilogy should make one think as to how a slightly immature youth could mature and blossom in such a short time to be a very reliable competent officer, Perhaps this is what some young people wait for in their life is to wait for an opportunity to shine but sometimes this can be beaten out of them and of course others succeed. My thought re Harry Gilmour and thousands of other hostility only volunteers despite their exemplary military service, what?, awaited them after the conflict, were there opportunities for them to carry there charisma and knowledge into the civilian world!!As I said to a friend of mine who was an armourer in the RAF in the early nineties (not a lot of call for an armourer in Aberdeen bo matter how profficient he is/was. Did this happen to the likes of Harry Gilmour and other decorated and serving military personell after WW2

The characters depicted in this sea story are representative of the submariners of the British Royal Navy and of British society. He does this very well by allowing the characters to interact true to the stereotype they represent. He shows how the elite allow a "Has-Been" to escape his just end while a member of common status cannot receive his due. Considering the submarine sailor who was imprisoned for photographing the crew exercise bike which was in front of secret equipment and the excusal of a member of the elite political class who seriously violated laws meant to protect national security, there is no difference between British and U.S. society. These character sketches are accomplished through changes of view. This is confusing at first, but one of can find their way with a little effort. There's plenty of action. It's a wonderful story.
