This is an older version. The same author, Clifford W. Atkinson, has a newer version, 1988, with the title A LAY MINISTER'S Guide to the Book of Common Prayer that is much better than the older version. I bought both and would recommend the revised version for those who serve as Eucharistic Minister's and Lay Readers for the Episcopal Church of America. Since the older version and the revised version have the same title, I recommend the 1988 version for a much improved and updated text complete with outlines for services. I further recommend membership in The Order of St. Vincent for advanced studies.
This is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in the various opportunities for Lay Ministry in the Episcopal Church. It covers the gamut from lay readers to Lay Eucharist Ministers.
I used this book as a beginning point when training Lay Ministers for leading Morning Prayer. I saved me lots of time in the absence of a formal study course. It is a well structured "course'in itself. It would be my hope that as dioceses re-view their training requirements for lay ministries this would be one book that they considered using.

While the book contains a helpful summary of the basics, it was published originally in 1977 and revised in 1988. Therefore, it quotes the old version of Canon III.3, which was revised and replaced in 2003. Unfortunately, the changes made in 2003 to the definitions of licensed lay ministries are significant and are not covered here.
